I don’t usually write reviews like this and I really was looking for any reason not to, but in order to save any in the future to feel as disappointed I do now, here we go.
This was a Christmas present for my sis and Dad – really wanted to treat them with this trip, so saved up and splashed out for a private tour. Having lived in Bali for over a month I figured that as this was so much money (9.5 to 10mil IDR, $618), it must be a truly one of a kind experience – was going to give us one of the best memories of the island we could ask for. Seeing the images and videos marketed, you’d believe that, but I guess it set my expectations far too high.
Before I get into the bad bits – The guides were perfectly nice enough, not going to fault them. It's just the entire experience/how not worth the price it is.
The boat – it’s okay. Probably one of the less nice boats I’ve been on in the few times I’ve had a boat trip. No wee shower off the back to rinse, no useable loo etc. both of which I don't really care about, but the thing which struck me most was we were paying over 3mil per person and the best we were offered on the boat was water. Nothing else, no snacks, nicer drink etc. That small kind of thing can go a long way when you're out for 6+ hours!
The first two snorkelling stops – we luckily saw one manta and other lovely corals, but we were only in the water for maybe less 15mins in total because ‘the conditions were too choppy/harsh’. It didn’t feel unsafe – there were plenty of people out paddling, so not sure why we were singled out and rushed off. Quite unfair especially when the cancellation policy is “This experience requires good weather. If it’s canceled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund.” – so why didn’t you just change the date or cancel? But this was another point – They say this on the website but they changed it slightly on the booking (after I’d read the website version and booked) to say *the port authority decides this, not us* essentially. And by then I couldn’t cancel because again, even though it says 24hr cancellation notice online, on the actual booking they change it to 48hr. Great.
On the island – we were taken around in a car with the loudest custom-fitted exhaust I’ve ever heard haha, it was actually kind of hilarious at first but after an hour of driving it gets annoying, naturally. The restaurant is not ‘fancy’ – you’re allowed one drink such as water, juice or a soda and a meal similar to chicken and rice. That’s all you can have. And you only have about an hour at this restaurant with an infinity pool, so not really any time to swim or enjoy it after eating. We cut the trip short on the island because even though the view at Nusa Penida was gorgeous, it was raining and pretty miserable by the time we got there, but not putting that at their fault because hey, this is wet season.
Last two snorkelling spots – the corals and fish were incredible, but I can’t really say they did that because any much cheaper boat trip would have the same incredible experience. It just left me with a pit in my stomach feeling, like I’d really been ripped off here.
Finally, I was waiting for the videos and photographs to be released of our day, because I thought you know what? If anything can save this it’s going to be the sick images they advertise taking for you while you’re on this trip. I couldn't wait to see what he'd captured behind the scenes.
...Well, I’ve attached an image of what we ended up with. No photographs, and that’s the quality of video we got.
I'm just really disappointed, I can't look at this as a good trip.
My advice – you can get so, so much better bang for your buck elsewhere on this beautiful island. $618 I had to save for weeks I’ll never see again. Thanks
